BEAR Scotland is a leading provider of highway maintenance services across Scotland. We manage and maintain over 2,000km of Scotland’s trunk road network, tackling just about every imaginable task and working round the clock to help keep Scotland moving.

The South East Trunk Road Unit spans 506km through some of the busiest sections of the country, from central Scotland to through the Scottish Borders. Trunk roads in the South East range from the major multi‑lane motorways across the central belt to roads through villages in the borders.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Severe Weather Technician to join our existing team on a full‑time basis.

The Severe Weather Technician (SWT) is responsible, on behalf of the operating company, for winter maintenance activities including:

• Collection and Management of Weather Data
• Maintaining salt stock levels and their storage facilities
• Achieving response times for precautionary treatment, patrols and snow clearance
• The Road Weather Information System (RWIS), weather forecasting service and weather radar system
• Training of Staff & Operatives
• Preparation and updating of rotas for duty staff, maintaining electronic records and manual records
• Providing an annual winter service report
• Liaising with Third Parties
• Communicating with Transport Scotland during severe weather events
• Participation in conference calls with Transport Scotland as required
• Implementing Additional Resources when required
• Ensuring completion of Daily Action Plans and Uploading to Vaisala Manager

• Experience working in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment, ideally within a control room setting (desirable)
• Strong ability to work under pressure, prioritise tasks effectively, and manage multiple demands at once.
• IHE Winter Decision Maker qualification – desirable, but training can be provided within the first year.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
