Position OverviewThis position is for a Virtualization Engineer supporting the Army Edge Computing Capability (AECC) project that ALTESS is fielding for the U.S. Army. The AECC solution is a hyperconverged, multitenant private cloud hosting environment for hosting Army enterprise and tactical applications. AECC is currently utilizing VMware products (ESXi, vSAN, NSX, vCloud Foundations, ARIA Automation) to implement a Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) across multiple global sites.
ALTESS provides value‑added common and managed services that hosted Army applications will require. ALTESS is a managed service provider (MSP) and hosting services provider for Army applications, and it is a Product Director office under the Program Executive Office Enterprise (PEO Enterprise).
- Work with Government engineers to develop and maintain the AECC architecture.
- Develop, deploy, and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for deployment and sustainment of the VMware suite of products in the AECC.
- Utilize IaC for the provisioning of customer enclaves as applications are hosted on the AECC solution.
- Provide daily administration of the VMware products, including patching and upgrading all VMware components.
- Monitor utilization of all virtualization resources and notify the AECC lead when additional resources will be required.
- Harden the VMware products per commercial best practices and required government cybersecurity controls.
- Troubleshoot and conduct root‑cause analysis of any hosting platform issues.
- Develop and maintain system, infrastructure, and process documentation (system diagrams, network topology, software configurations, device configurations, standard operating procedures).
- Provide on‑call support for triage and resolution of after‑hours production incidents.
- Make recommendations for improvements to security, scalability, manageability, and performance across diverse network, storage, and compute services and technologies.
- Senior‑level experience with the VMware suite of products (ESXi, vSAN, NSX, vCloud Foundations, ARIA Automation).
- Strong automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across the entire technology stack — network, storage, server, and applications.
- Working knowledge of DoD Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIG) and the Information Assurance Vulnerability Management (IAVM) process.
- Hands‑on experience with container platforms and container orchestration.
- Understanding of Kubernetes networking (CNI) and storage (CSI) principles.
- Experience managing Kubernetes applications using Helm charts and maintaining container images in a registry.
- Experience with Git Ops principles and tools (e.g., Argo CD, Flux).
Bachelor's degree or higher in an IT‑related field.
Required Certifications- Security+ or equivalent DoD 8570.01‑M IA Tech Level II certification.
