Position: Palliative Oncology Physician (MD/DO) - UNC Health Cancer Care/Raleigh Cancer Center

UNC Health Cancer Care/Raleigh Cancer Center is seeking a Palliative Oncology Physician.

Summary: Will provide clinical leadership and expertise within the Palliative Care team to improve care throughout the hospital for patients with advanced illness and those approaching end‑of‑life and their families.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide medical consultation for patients and families with advanced illness to include pain and symptom management, assistance with medical decision making, advance care planning, and the establishment of goals of care.
  • Assist in the establishment of realistic treatment goals, resuscitation status, and the benefits and burdens of proposed treatments for seriously ill and dying patients.
  • Provide supervision of the Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner according to NC State Rule and Regulations and Rex Healthcare policy.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds to review and prioritize the needs of patients on Palliative Care Services.
  • Conduct and participate in family meetings to discuss medical decision‑making and resolve conflict.
  • Assist in the identification of educational needs of physicians, clinical staff, and support staff regarding palliative care issues.
  • Assist in the development of policies and evidence‑based protocols to promote quality end‑of‑life care.
  • Maintain membership on the Ethics Committee to provide expertise in difficult decision‑making and conflict resolution.
  • Provide leadership to the Physician Advisory Group and referring physicians to ensure that Palliative Care Services is well integrated with existing services and supports educational and quality initiatives.
  • Provide appropriate documentation of direct patient care which will support successful billing for professional services.
  • Participate in budget planning to ensure the sustainability of Palliative Care Services.

    Education Requirements: Graduation from an accredited school of medicine.

    Licensure/Certification Requirements: Board Certified in Internal Medicine; DEA; MD.

    Professional Experience Requirements: Prefer prior experience in hospice and palliative medicine.

    Skills:

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to patients, visitors, and employees of the organization. Mathematical
