Wake Technical Community College is seeking to expand our pool of adjunct faculty to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) classes in the College and Career Readiness Division (CCR). Openings for these positions may not exist at the present time; however upon review of your qualifications, you may be contacted directly by the department on an as‑needed basis.

Responsibilities
  • Assess student needs.
  • Create and execute daily lesson plans based on the federal English Language Proficiency Standards, ESL curriculum, current research‑based ESL methodologies and student needs to provide interactive, contextualized instruction in preparing students to transition to college and careers.
  • Utilize various LMS platforms for delivery of virtual instruction; learn and implement technology to enhance instruction in seated and online environments.
  • Perform routine administrative functions of the classroom including enforcing student attendance policy, ensuring accurate attendance documentation, communicating regularly with students, staff and supervisor and ensuring students access to virtual and seated classes.
  • Facilitate community building in virtual and/or seated instruction through collaborative learning, open dialogue, communicative activities, student participation/engagement and retention activities, including continuous contact with students through email, texts and phone calls.
  • Participate in scheduled Professional Development and staff meetings.
  • Collaborate with Instructional Program Specialists and College & Career Readiness Staff to identify students needing additional support and assist eligible students who are transitioning into college and careers.
  • Adhere to all policies of the site at which the ESL classes are held, unless in direct conflict with College policies.

  • Self‑directed, organized, task‑ and detail‑oriented, and flexible.
  • Demonstrate a variety of instructional techniques and methods.
  • Demonstrate native‑like fluency in English.
  • Create and execute quality interactive contextualized daily lesson plans based on the ESL curriculum, tailored to student needs and current ESL methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of computers, especially the use of the internet and Microsoft Office.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
  • At least 6 months of ESL teaching experience in a classroom OR 3 months adult teaching experience in a classroom with an ESL certificate from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Native‑like fluency in English.
  • Ability to develop and teach original lesson plans for a classroom setting that incorporate contextualized instruction, real‑life/authentic materials and technology.
  • Digital literacy, especially in the use of the internet, technology as a teaching tool, and Microsoft Office; ability to incorporate technology such as PowerPoint, LCD projectors, iPads, tablets and/or internet‑based activities into the classroom.
Preferences
  • ESL, ESOL or TESOL certificate.
  • Completion of online teaching training and/or online teaching certificate with ESL experience.
  • Experience teaching adults in a community college setting.
