Position Overview

The Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences (FBNS) seeks applications from highly qualified scientists for a tenure‑track assistant or associate professor position in food microbiology. This position carries an 80% Research and 20% teaching split. Research focus should be in microbial food safety and proposed areas are broad and include, but are not limited to: animal, human, and food system microbiome;

chemical and physical modes of foodborne pathogen inactivation; biofilms; advanced microbial detection and characterization methods, including WGS; non-cultivable and emerging foodborne pathogens (e.g., viruses, parasitic protozoa, Cronobacter, etc.); microbial risk analysis; and incorporation of artificial intelligence technology for enhancing food safety and traceability.

In this role you will be expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program with both individual and collaborative (multidisciplinary) work. Your collaborations are to include fellow academic scientists; industry and government stakeholders; and growers, processors, and entrepreneurs, especially those in North Carolina. You will get opportunities to actively seek extramural funding for your research program and serve in leadership roles on state, local, national, and international committees and boards.

Additionally, there will also be exceptions that you will actively participate in undergraduate and graduate level teaching activities in food microbiology and safety.

Your excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills will assist in your success developing both research and teaching programs. The research program to be developed will be nationally recognized and extramurally funded through fundamental and/or applied research in areas that address critical data gaps, new technologies, and stakeholder needs in the area of food microbiology. A research focus on pathogens is preferred, which could include but is not limited to biofilms, difficult to cultivate pathogens, molecular detection of infectious pathogens, etc.

The successful applicant will work in a collaborative and interdisciplinary manner with other professionals within and outside of the university.

The initial teaching expectation is 1-2 graduate/undergraduate courses per year in the area of food microbiology. Specifically, the teaching…
