Position Overview
Design Camp is an annual series of pre‑college summer programs offered at NC State University College of Design to high school and middle school students. The program introduces students to college study in design and highlights the impact of design in everyday life. Over forty years of operation, it has inspired thousands of aspiring designers, including graduates who have achieved national and international success.
The camp benefits campers, faculty, staff and students who work with the program.
Instructors teach campers in a single studio for one or more weeks of camp. Candidates may be hired to teach the following programs:
Middle School Day Camps, Design Fundamentals Day Camp, High School Explorations Day Camp, High School Residential Camps, Design Connections Residential, and Design Immersions. Instructors work with a Teaching Assistant (TA) of the same or a closely related discipline; co‑teaching pairs may be assigned where appropriate.
Instructors follow the Design Camp curriculum guidelines, develop age‑appropriate projects aligned with the year's theme, and represent the College of Design in an engaging way for the assigned age group.
Work Schedule & TrainingInstructors work approximately 8:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m. during camp weeks and must attend a mandatory half‑day Camp Prep Day before each session. Planning meetings occur in late March through early April, mid‑ to late April, and late April through early May. Training with TAs takes place May 20–22, 2026. All instructors must attend the All Staff Meeting on Friday, June 5, 2026.

Design Camp cleanup and staff evaluations
- College of Design faculty, adjunct faculty, graduate students, and design professionals are eligible to apply.
- Physical ability to lift and carry 10‑30 lbs. and perform general mobility tasks.
- Candidate must pass a criminal background check.
- Experience in planning and implementing design projects with high‑school and middle‑school students.
- Demonstrated design skills, understanding of design thinking and process, and teaching/leadership experience.
- Enthusiasm for education and teaching essential.
- Excellent organizational, writing and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain positive professional relationships with colleagues and students.
- Willingness and ability to support fellow staff and collaborate as a team player.
