Summary

Delta Oaks Group is seeking a motivated Field Scientist to perform field investigations, data collection, and environmental site reconnaissance in support of Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) and environmental compliance reviews under NEPA, ESA, CWA, and NHPA. This position involves hands-on fieldwork, environmental sampling, and preparation of associated documentation to support project permitting and regulatory compliance across the telecommunications, renewable energy, commercial, and governmental sectors.

Positional

Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will possess practical field experience in environmental site assessments, soil and groundwater sampling, and regulatory due diligence. The Field Scientist will conduct environmental field operations while coordinating closely with project scientists, clients, and regulatory agencies.

  • Conduct site reconnaissance and collect environmental data as part of Phase I ESA field operations.
  • Perform visual inspections and field documentation to identify Recognized Environmental Conditions (RECs), Controlled Recognized Environmental Conditions (CRECs), and other environmental concerns.
  • Conduct NEPA-related site inspections for biological, cultural, and wetland resources in support of environmental reviews and assessments.
  • Identify threatened or endangered species habitats and potential wetlands through field indicators and informal biological assessments.
  • Assist in coordinating with State and Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs/THPOs) to support compliance with Section 106 of the NHPA.
  • Support permitting activities related to the Clean Water Act (Sections 401/404) and other applicable environmental regulations.
  • Ensure accurate data collection, field notes, and photo documentation consistent with ASTM E1527-21 and E2600-22 standards.
  • Participate in the preparation of technical reports summarizing field findings, environmental observations, and recommendations.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality field operations.

Due to the nature and limited timelines of most projects, the selected individual should be willing and capable of exhibiting the work ethic and social ability to succeed in a fast-paced environment where communication with co-workers and strategic partners is paramount.

Computer Software Requirements

Experience/Minimum Requirements
  • Familiarity with ASTM E1527-21 and ASTM E2600-22 standards.
  • Basic understanding of NEPA, Section 106, and other federal environmental review processes
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (preferred or willingness to obtain).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, maintain organized field records, and meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in variable weather and terrain conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and a proactive approach to problem solving.

Educational Requirements

Associate’s degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Biology, Natural Resources, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

Travel

Heavy travel, approximately 75%, will be required
