We are looking for our next Senior Energy Engineer to provide professional guidance and leadership in energy management as well as improving and maintaining a variety of facilities. This position includes analyzing and presenting data, making repairs and improvements in energy efficiency in the building portfolio, and serving as Project Manager for energy projects.
At GSA our portfolio includes nearly 200 buildings, totaling over 5 million square feet, ranging from cutting-edge new construction to historic high-rises in NC. Every day brings something new and we keep you inside the county, only traveling from Apex to Zebulon.
Essential Functions:
This position is responsible for specializing in Mechanical & Electrical projects such as HVAC controls, LED lighting, retro-commissioning, solar PV, and EV charging projects. It assists in energy analysis and long‑term planning for the entire building portfolio to reduce utility and operating costs and make progress on County strategic goals and resolutions. The Physical Plant has 4 work groups—General Trades, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing.
Supervisors for these trades often rely on this position for guidance in problem solving, modernizing systems, or coordinating resources among each trade discipline, especially related to optimizing facility energy use. Essentially, this position’s expertise will be solicited and valued on energy‑related items.
The Senior Energy Engineer will also have responsibility for energy management of Wake County facilities and is staff to the Wake County Energy Advisory Commission along with the Physical Plant Director. This position works closely with Facilities Design & Construction to ensure that buildings are built in a sustainable and maintainable manner.
Key Responsibilities- Facility Management:
Keep Wake County facilities, building systems, and related equipment operating consistently and efficiently, assisting Trades Supervisors with troubleshooting system failures and ensuring code compliance and regulatory requirements. - Project Management:
Function as or work collaboratively with Project Managers on establishing scope, budget, design, schedule, and implementation of projects. - Data Analysis:
Analyze a range of data inputs—including utility data and building system information—to identify trends that assist decision‑making and interpret diagnostics on system operations. - Presentations:
Craft and deliver detailed presentations on energy concepts to a broad range of audiences. - Leadership:
Offer guidance to all related Trades groups with strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems, and general construction principals. - Planning:
Assist in planning of CIP projects in the Energy Conservation Measure CIP, ensuring technology implementation includes a defined maintenance plan.

The Basics (RequiredEducation and Experience )
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facility Management or related field
- Five years of job‑related experience
- A valid driver’s license and a safe driving record
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted

- Project management related certification (PMP)
- CEM or PEM Certification
- Eight years of experience in engineering or architecture related field
- Five years or more experience in managing projects
