Bridge Inspection Team Leader
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Full‑Time Bridge Inspection Team Leader in the Southeast Region. This position supports our robust and growing Bridge Inspection Practice from offices in Mooresville, NC;
Raleigh, NC;
Greenville, SC; or Columbia, SC.
The Team Leader will use education, licensure, and relevant work experience to perform independent and complete evaluation of the condition, function, and load‑carrying capacity of bridges and their components. These evaluations may form the basis of recommendations to bridge owners for repair, rehabilitation, or replacement. This role offers advancement opportunities and the chance to grow a team supporting bridge inspection projects.
Key Responsibilities- Plan, schedule and perform bridge inspections in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation.
- Use engineering knowledge to inspect bridges throughout the Southeast for deterioration and structural damage to keep the public safe and maintain road systems.
- Generate complete, accurate, and concise bridge inspection reports using electronic systems, drawings, and field/work site logs.
- Perform engineering calculations on bridge repair designs, bridge load ratings, and construction inspections.
- Comply with safety guidelines and site‑specific procedures to ensure work is completed correctly.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Associate’s degree in a construction‑related discipline or relevant job experience; or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or closely related discipline.
- 3+ years of experience in bridge design and/or bridge inspection.
- NHI Course 130055 Safety Inspection of In‑Service Bridges Certificate.
- Proficient self‑discipline with attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
- Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non‑engineering audience.
- Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Physically capable of performing field work including climbing ladders (≤ 40 ft) and operating in adverse weather conditions.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel/overnight travel may be required.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
- The selected candidate must have the ability to work in the United States immediately.
- Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
- Additional FHWA/NHI Training – (130078) Bridge Inspection Techniques for Nonredundant Steel Tension Members (NSTM).
- Experience with drafting software (AutoCAD, Micro Station, etc.).
- Experience with engineering calculation software (AASHTOWare Bridge Rating, Mathcad, SAP
2000, etc.). - Comfortable working at heights (≥ 40 ft) and interest in working on ropes (SPRAT Certification).
- Enjoy working outdoors, seeing the world.
- Experience inspecting complex bridges.
- FAA Part 107 certification or interest in UAS drone flying.
- Familiarity with or certifications in various NDT techniques.
- Interest in programming and/or experience with databases, data analytics, or APIs.
