The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It safeguards and preserves lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation, and by caring for, caring for, and supervising all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This division includes state prisons, healthcare and facility operations staff, probation/parole officers, and other administrative and special operations functions.
Our mission matters and we are looking for a dedicated individual to serve as a Regional Correctional Transportation Officer.
Salary Range: $41,558.00 – $54,078.00

- Exercise independent decision‑making within established policies and procedures due to physical separation from supervisory personnel.
- Provide custody supervision of offender(s) in their custody and control while traveling between facilities.
- Enforce rules and regulations for the safety, health, and protection of offenders.
- Perform searches of persons, places, and objects.
- Carry out rescue functions, including CPR, basic first aid, physically removing people from dangerous areas, and using fire equipment (hoses, extinguishers, breathing apparatus).
- Establish and maintain control of violent or uncooperative offenders.
- Defend self or others against violent attacks.
- Load, unload, aim, and fire handguns, shotguns, and rifles at the level of proficiency required, always maintaining a professional demeanor even in mentally and verbally abusive situations.
- Effectively communicate with offenders, staff, and members of the public.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Regional Office.
- Minimum
Education and Experience:
High School or GED diploma and two years of experience as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. - Necessary Special
Qualifications:
Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission. - Effective July 1, 2025, candidates meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification.
- Management preferences include documented interpersonal skills needed to communicate with all types of people.
These positions are 8‑hour shifts Monday‑Friday with possible call‑back. Start times will vary depending on transportation trip schedules. Must be flexible and available to work weekends, holidays, and possible evenings based on operational needs.
Current State Employees are encouraged to apply even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position.
PaySalary will be recalculated based on relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. A pay increase may result.
