General Description of the Job Class
Apply ionizing radiation to patients (including pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations) in accordance with the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist and under the supervision of the Chief Therapist.
Duties and Responsibilities- Deliver accurately the prescribed course of radiation therapy with minimal supervision.
- Check prescription, diagnosis, chart, and patient identification.
- Explain procedures to patients, including communication during treatment and emergency procedures.
- Reinforce Radiation Oncologist’s advice regarding treatment reactions and patient care.
- Prepare treatment room and equipment according to prescription, including immobilization devices, field size, treatment distance, and lead protection.
- Transfer patients safely to treatment couches, attending to catheters, IVs, etc.
- Check daily treatment schedules and deliver prescribed doses.
- Maintain communication with patients during treatment and observe for reactions, reporting any issues.
- Follow radiation safety measures for patients and staff.
- Perform simulations and assist in tumor localization and immobilization procedures.
- Assist in dosimetry and review weekly port films.
- Participate in on-call rotations as required.
- Perform daily QA and accelerator warm-up procedures.
- Maintain treatment records and participate in departmental quality assurance and improvement activities.
- Perform mold room duties and maintain supplies.
- Report equipment issues to appropriate staff.
- Participate in departmental performance improvement activities and assist in hiring and onboarding new staff.
- Attend departmental meetings and educational sessions.
- Adhere to hospital policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of a 24-month radiology or radiation therapy technology program, or a 12-month radiation therapy program, or equivalent experience.
- One year of clinical training in Radiation Therapy.
- Current licensure and certification as required, including ARRT certification with ongoing continuing education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of radiation therapy equipment and procedures.
- Understanding of human anatomy and patient positioning.
- Ability to administer CPR in emergencies.
