Position OverviewThe primary objective of EMS is to provide safe and compassionate ambulance and medical transportation, preserving patients' dignity and ensuring community safety. EMS personnel provide non-emergency convalescent transfers, community event medical stand-by, and respond to emergency calls to assist in immediate care and transport of critically sick and injured patients at the level of training and authorization.
Essential Job Functions- Attend instruction sessions for orientation, EMS operations, compliance, emergency vehicle operations, and maintain EMS certification and other required programs.
- Provide out-of-hospital care to patients and safe ambulance transport in consideration of statewide protocols, medical command direction, and assessment under WV EMS Rules and Regulations (64
CFR
48). - Lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 125 lbs. alone and 250 lbs. with assistance, up to 33 inches in height, for 10 feet.
- Hear, comprehend, and respond to spoken information from co-workers, patients, physicians, dispatchers, and common emergency scene sounds.
- Verbally communicate in person, via telephone, and telecommunications using the English language.
- Meet the minimum vision requirements to operate a motor vehicle with the state of WV.
- Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions and document patient information via approved WV OEMS record system.
- Demonstrate manual dexterity and fine motor skills, performing all movements needed for patient care (bend, stoop, crawl, walk on uneven surfaces).
- Inspect EMS equipment, ensure adequate supplies, verify proper operation, refuel and check fluids of the assigned ambulance, and report needed maintenance.
- Respond to callback or call-in emergency situations.
- Assist other emergency personnel as required and complete tasks assigned by supervisors and management.
- Maintain professional appearance and decorum; perform general maintenance and cleaning work in stations, training facilities, and ambulances; be a self-starter requiring little oversight.
- Perform event stand-by operations at sporting events, community festivals, and other large gatherings.
- Respond to hazardous material incidents and function in uncommon situations; perform emergency operations during natural disasters and catastrophic events.
- Have basic understanding of stress response and methods to ensure personal well‑being, body substance isolation, and patients' privacy under HIPAA.
- Interact and assist professionally with outside agencies including medical facility staff, child/elder protective services, social workers, morticians, medical examiners, law enforcement, fire/rescue, and communication personnel.
- General knowledge of EMS operations, ambulance operation, and proper use of EMS equipment.
- Ability to learn through training and various EMS methods.
- Ability to acquire knowledge of street systems and general physical layout of assigned communities.
- Obtain necessary skills, including opening and maintaining an airway, ventilating a patient, administering CPR, and using certification-level appropriate medications and defibrillators. Provide trauma care including hemorrhage control, shock treatment, bandaging, and immobilizing injured extremities, necks, or spines.
- EMS operations occur 24/7, 365 days a year in all weather conditions. Ambulances and personnel must respond at a moment's notice and maintain viable field operations until resolved or relieved.
