Job SummaryThe Financial Care Counselor accurately completes patient accounts, adheres to regulatory compliance, and ensures patients are informed of financial responsibilities before services.
Responsibilities- Accurately complete patient accounts based on departmental protocol, policies, and procedures, and enforce regulatory compliance for all pre‑admission, admission, pre‑registration, and registration functions.
- Ensure all insurance requirements are met before patients’ arrival and inform patients of their financial liability prior to service.
- Analyze insurance coverage and benefits to ensure timely reimbursement, obtain prior authorization certifications, and obtain necessary authorizations as appropriate.
- Facilitate payment sources for uninsured patients, determine if the patient’s condition is the result of an accident, and perform research to identify liability/payment sources.
- Admit, register, and pre‑register patients with accurate demographic and financial data; resolve insurance claim rejections/denials and remedy them expediently.
- Calculate and collect cash payments for all patients, reconcile the daily cash deposit, and evaluate diagnoses for Medicare Review Policy compliance.
- Compile departmental statistics for budgetary and reporting purposes, explain bills according to PRMO credit and collection policies, and implement appropriate collection actions.
- Determine necessity of third‑party sponsorship, process patients per policy, and examine insurance policies for payment sources.
- Inform physicians of patients’ financial hardship, complete managed care waiver forms when required, and update the billing system to reflect insurance status.
- Refer patients to the Manufacturer Drug program as needed, greet and assist visitors and patients, explain policies, resolve problems, and gather documentation for inquiries and complaints.
- Obtain authorizations based on insurance plan contracts, document billing system updates, and communicate with insurance carriers regarding coverage and payment issues.
Education
- High school education with basic grammar and mathematical principles. Postsecondary education preferred.
Experience
- Two years’ experience in hospital service access, clinical service access, a physician office, or billing and collections.
- OR an associate’s degree in a healthcare‑related field and one year of experience working with the public.
- OR a bachelor’s degree and one year of experience working with the public.
Required

- Excellent oral and written communication.
- Ability to analyze data, perform multiple tasks, and work independently.
- Proficiency with professional, service‑oriented relationships with patients, physicians, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Comprehension and compliance with policies and procedures.
