About the DepartmentThe NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. As a Veterinary Technician
, you’ll play an essential role in providing exceptional nursing care and treatment for hospitalized small animal patients. Working alongside clinicians, residents, interns, students, and fellow technicians, you’ll perform hands‑on clinical work such as IV catheter placement, medication administration, post‑surgical monitoring, and specialized treatment procedures. You’ll also ensure accurate medical documentation, maintain a clean and safe hospital environment, and help teach and mentor veterinary students in proper patient care techniques.
Additionally, this job involves lifting up to 50 pounds (with or without reasonable accommodations) and working safely around anesthetic gases, cleaning chemicals, and zoonotic diseases.
- Provide direct patient care for hospitalized small animals, including venipuncture, IV catheter placement, medication administration, and wound management.
- Monitor and care for post‑anesthetic and post‑surgical patients, ensuring safe recovery and appropriate pain management.
- Operate and maintain specialized equipment such as IV fluid pumps, syringe pumps, and monitoring devices.
- Admit patients and communicate care plans with clinicians, students, and clients; accurately document treatments and diagnostics in the hospital system.
- Support hospital operations by maintaining a clean and safe work environment, following infection control, OSHA, and radiation safety policies.
- Assist in training, orienting, and mentoring new staff, students, interns, and residents in hospital procedures and standards of care.
