Tactile American Sign Language Interpreter
Location: Raleigh, North Carolina
Job Type: Part‑time (21-28 hours per week)
Base Pay: $43,000.00/yr – $45,000.00/yr
Our organization, Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), has been committed to improving the lives of individuals who are Deaf Blind or have a combined hearing and vision loss since 1967. We are seeking a skilled interpreter to provide in‑person interpreting and instruction for the Director of Field Services and other HKNC staff.
Responsibilities- Provide on‑campus and field interpreting as required.
- Provide instruction in American Sign Language and Pro‑Tactile and/or adaptive communication to Director of Field Services and HKNC staff.
- Provide consumer education related to interpreting issues.
- Interpret for selected staff, students, and others outside the regularly scheduled work period; adjust work hours accordingly.
- Share responsibility for the equipment and general appearance of the work area.
- Accompany and serve as an SSP/Co‑Navigator and/or interpreter for the Director of Field Services and professional staff members; may require personal vehicle use for travel to field sites, meetings, or events, including travel to Sands Point, NY.
- Be flexible with work schedules, including some evening hours and overnight stays; occasional travel may be required.
- Perform other duties as assigned or requested by immediate supervisor and/or the Director of the Department.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably from an Interpreting Training Program.
- North Carolina Interpreter/Translator Licensure.
- Pass RID/NAD NIC Knowledge test; obtain RID/NAD NIC certification within 5 years of employment.
- Proficiency in methods of communication utilized by individuals who are Deaf Blind; 2–3 years of interpreting experience with Deaf Blind and/or deaf‑visually impaired individuals.
- Flexibility to work evening hours as required by students or staff; willingness to travel when needed.
