Unit:
Medical – Surgical Oncology, NP 5200. 37-bed inpatient adult medical/stepdown oncology unit. 12-hour night shifts (7P to 7A). Weekend expectation: up to 96 hours per 8-week schedule. Major holidays on a 3-year rotating schedule.

Job Summary
Plan and provide professional nursing care for patients in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures. RNs with no previous oncology/chemo experience will be trained to administer chemotherapy/immunotherapy within 6-8 months of hire. We offer didactic education and hands-on precepted orientation for chemotherapy/immunotherapy administration based on ONS/APHON guidelines, DUHS policies and procedures, and evidence-based practice standards. RNs will complete the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate Course within 24 months of initial chemotherapy/immunotherapy competency with DUHS.
Job Duties
- Plan and provide professional nursing care for patients in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein
- Assist other nursing personnel in the delivery of nursing care
- Assist in the development and implementation of general policies and responses
- Provide direction and guidance in the proper use, care and control of assigned resources with physician orders and established policies and procedures; collect and analyze patient data; develop and implement nursing care plans; communicate to proper personnel; serve as team leader or charge nurse as needed
- Maintain standards of cleanliness in assigned areas and ensure quality and effectiveness of nursing care
- Observe activities of nursing staff and recommend improvements to nursing management
Experience
Required Qualifications at this Level
- No experience required
- All CNIs will be enrolled in and must complete the DUHS Nurse Residency Program within 12 months of hire
- CNIs must meet criteria set forth by the DUHS Nurse Residency Program within 18 months of hire to be promoted to CNII
Education, Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
- Graduation from an accredited Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program is required
- All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) must enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of start date and complete it within five years
- Nurses hired with a valid compact license must obtain North Carolina nursing license within 90 days
- BLS required
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge of scope of the registered nurse, licensed practical nurse and NCA
- Knowledge of nursing process and professional theory, practice, and procedure
- Ability to assess nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and families
- Ability to work collaboratively and communicate clearly with patients, families, healthcare team, physicians, and leadership
- Ability to teach patients and families per the care plan
- Ability to document and communicate using computer and/or paper tools; ability to use fine motor skills
- Competent in BLS and other life support requirements as designated
- Ability to record activities, assess plans of care, and evaluate patient status
