Clinical Nurse II – Bed Placement Nurse

Capacity Management | Non-Bedside RN Role

Role Summary

The Clinical Nurse II – Bed Placement Nurse is a non-bedside Registered Nurse role within the Capacity Management team. This position is responsible for system-level coordination of patient placement, admissions, transfers, and level-of-care decisions across the hospital and health system.

The role supports safe, timely, and appropriate patient placement by coordinating admissions, internal transfers, and level-of-care assignments to optimize patient safety, access to care, and hospital throughput
. Bed Placement Nurses apply advanced clinical judgment, regulatory knowledge, and systems-level thinking to make high-stakes decisions in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment. The role supports patients of all ages, service lines, and acuity levels and maintains real‑time situational awareness of hospital capacity.

Unit Description – Capacity Management Team

The Bed Placement Nurse functions within a centralized Capacity Management team that coordinates patient placement across the hospital and health system.

Key aspects of the unit include:

  • A high‑complexity, fast‑paced environment
  • Close collaboration with:
    • Nursing leadership
    • Physicians
    • Transfer Center
    • Emergency Departments
    • Inpatient units
    • Environmental Services and other operational stakeholders

The team supports patients of all ages and acuity levels, including those requiring specialized resources. This is a non‑bedside role with no direct patient assignments, relying instead on clinical expertise and systems thinking to balance patient needs, safety, and real‑time capacity demands. The role serves as a clinical and operational resource in a 24/7 environment

Preferred Qualifications

Qualified candidates typically bring:

  • BSN preferred
  • Clinical experience in one or more of the following:
    • Emergency Department
    • Critical Care
    • House Supervision
    • Transfer Center
    • Bed Placement or patient throughput‑focused roles
  • Demonstrated ability to apply clinical judgment without direct bedside care
  • Experience coordinating admissions, transfers, or level-of-care placement
  • Proficiency with Epic or similar EHR systems
    , including bed management workflows
  • Strong communication, prioritization, and critical‑thinking skills
  • Experience with quality improvement, patient flow, or capacity initiatives
  • Lean or operational leadership experience (preferred)

With assistance, uses patient education materials relevant to patient population. Assesses readiness to learn of the patient/family/caregivers. Assesses developmental level of patient and factors affecting ability to learn.
  • Evaluation of Care - Identifies expected patient outcomes. Seeks guidance as needed in revision of plan of care. Participates in discussion with members of the interdisciplinary team in evaluation of patient care. Communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.
