Overview

Postdoctoral Research Scholar Position - Pain Research at North Carolina State University. NIH‑funded work evaluating the role of ligand/receptor signaling in osteoarthritis (OA) pain to understand mechanisms of musculoskeletal pain and identify therapeutic targets using two mouse OA models and naturally occurring OA in owned pet dogs and cats. The project will involve naïve and transgenic animals, various cellular and molecular approaches, and behavioral assays of pain, function, and movement across species.

This is a two‑year minimum position and the main focus of the role.

• Formulate and test novel hypotheses; work independently and train graduate students.
• Work under the guidance of Dr. Duncan Lascelles and Dr. Mishra.
• Collaborate with a dedicated project technician; interact with graduate students, Veterinarian Research Assistants, Research Specialist Technicians, and undergraduates; collaborate with on‑site faculty Drs. Gruen and Nolan.
• Carry out independent work, present research findings, publish in peer‑reviewed journals, participate in grant proposal preparation, and interact with faculty and students at the University and collaborating institutions.
• All work will be mentored with the goal of developing independence as a researcher.

• Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) with background in pain research and/or neuroscience.
• Hard working, highly motivated, able to manage multiple projects.
• Experience with benchtop molecular and cellular assays (qPCR, Western blot, immunohistochemistry, Ca2+ imaging, in‑situ hybridization, IHC).
• Experience with behavioral pain assays in mice and rats.
• Experience working with dogs preferred.
• Grant and manuscript writing experience preferred.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong organizational and analytical abilities.

Strong collaborations with pain researchers at UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University; mentor‑led environment with opportunities to interact with multiple disciplines.
