About the Department

By Act of the North Carolina State Legislature in 1946, the Minerals Research Laboratory was chartered to perform research and development and promote the minerals of North Carolina and to better develop the mining industry of North Carolina. Since then, the MRL has expanded to include service for clients from across the United States and around the world. The MRL is an extension of the Industrial Extension Service of the College of Engineering.

The MRL’s mission is the same as the Industrial Extension Service: to be a statewide, university‑affiliated organization partnering with North Carolina industry as a catalyst for the transfer of knowledge and technology in support of economic development.
