Data Scientist, Research Scientist
Overview
The Assistant Director of Research and Evaluation leads and supports a team of researchers conducting high-quality studies for community college stakeholders, including college presidents, policymakers, and practitioners. You will be responsible for guiding the design, execution, and dissemination of qualitative and quantitative research, and ensuring findings meaningfully inform decision-making across the state. Working closely with research leadership, project teams, and external collaborators, you will advance a broad research agenda and manage key evaluation initiatives across multiple grants and statewide programs.
ResponsibilitiesCore responsibilities fall into two key areas:
Research Operations & Design:
- Collaborate with research leadership to organize documentation and data related to the research agenda and develop project-relevant content for convenings (e.g., data workbooks, PPT slides).
- Manage research and evaluation for North Carolina’s replication of the CUNY ASAP model through the Boost project and federally funded grants including Title III, Rural Postsecondary Economic Development, and the Institute for Education Sciences.
- Develop and write reports, executive summaries, and scholarly articles to disseminate findings, independently or within groups.
- Design qualitative and quantitative evaluation approaches, collect data, and prepare, organize, and analyze datasets to support high-quality research.
- Publish or co-publish research and present findings at regional and national conferences.
- Travel as needed to engage with stakeholders in study design, data collection, and dissemination.
- Support the development of research skills with graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and external collaborators.
- Collaborate with associate directors of research and evaluation to meet established grant timelines and deliverables.
- Support and guide a team of researchers that may include graduate students.
Other Responsibilities
In addition to the core responsibilities of this role, there may be occasional opportunities to take on additional duties. This offers an opportunity to build on your skills, explore new areas, and gain a deeper understanding of the department’s operations.
QualificationsMinimum Education and Experience
Requires post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
Other Required Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of and experience working with qualitative data or longitudinal data sets at the student level.
- Experience conducting research using qualitative coding and thematic memo-ing or quantitative statistics and quasi-experimental designs.
- Knowledge of the unique context of community colleges.
- Expertise using qualitative software such as Dedoose or Invivo or statistical software such as Stata, SPSS, R, or SAS.
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- High attention to detail, accuracy, and quality control.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D or equivalent doctorate (e.g., Ed.D.) in appropriate field.
- Substantial knowledge of the North Carolina Community Colleges.
