DepartmentApplied Aquatic Ecology Center
About the DepartmentThe overall goal of the Center for Applied Aquatic Ecology (CAA
E) is to provide services and service-related research and training of young scientists about surface water quality, impacts of nutrient over-enrichment and related pollutants on aquatic ecosystems (freshwater to marine), algal ecology, and education outreach in aquatic science. Our work requires specialized facilities and equipment such as a state-certified water quality analytical laboratory with several acid-resistant fume hoods and acid-resistant plumbing, research microscopes and algal culturing facilities, boats and gear for sampling surface waters, and real-time remote monitoring platforms in aquatic field sites.
High-quality data from the CAAE contributes to the State environmental agency database and to research projects at the CAAE and to graduate students’ research in other NCSU laboratories. The CAAE’s water quality research and monitoring programs are important in helping to safeguard human health and beneficial aquatic life in fresh waters and estuaries, such as the center’s long-term efforts in several potable source-water reservoirs, which are depended upon by more than 750,000 North Carolinians.
