- Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on fire apparatus, emergency vehicles, and support equipment
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues and implement effective solutions
- Maintain accurate service records and documentation for all vehicles and equipment
- Ensure all apparatus meet safety standards and be ready for emergency response
- Collaborate with team members and other departments to support fleet operations
- Recommend and assist with improvements to vehicle performance, reliability, and safety
High School Diploma or GED Equivalent with 6 months+ training beyond High School Level in Automotive Repair or related field, and 3 to 5 years’ experience in automotive repair, vehicle electronics, or a related field
OR
Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.
Licensing and Certifications- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Automotive Service Excellence certifications
- Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification or equivalent experience
- Experience working with fire apparatus or other emergency vehicles
- Experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, vehicle electronics, air conditioning diagnosis/repair, and air brake systems
- Mechanical systems, including diesel engines, hydraulics, and air brake systems
- Electrical and electronic systems used in emergency vehicles
- Fire apparatus and emergency vehicle components and maintenance requirements
- Safety procedures and best practices for vehicle repair and maintenance
- Diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and air conditioning issues
- Performing routine maintenance and complex repairs on vehicles and equipment
- Reading and interpreting technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins
- Effective communication and collaboration within a team environment, with strong teamwork and organization
- Committing to safety and quality workmanship
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem‑solving
- Applying mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot and solve problems efficiently
- Maintaining focus on safety and quality while performing repairs
- Organizing work tasks and prioritizing maintenance needs
- Adapting to new tools, technologies, and emergency vehicle systems
- Reading and interpreting technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins
- Safely using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment
Work Environment and Physical Effort:
Medium:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, street environment, vehicle, or in a shop environment. Employees may occasionally work in an office or similar indoor environment.
Work ExposuresThere is frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts. Employees may occasionally be exposed to extreme cold (below 32 °F), extreme heat (above 100 °F), fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances, and loud noises (85+ decibels average over an 8‑hour working day such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction).
