Job Duties

A Lifeguard is a trained and certified safety professional responsible for ensuring the safety and protection of people in and around an aquatic environment. In this role, you will ensure the safety of all users through continuous surveillance of the aquatic area. You will enforce aquatic guidelines to maintain a safe environment and be prepared to implement the Emergency Action Plan when necessary.

  • Safety and Surveillance:
    Ensure the safety of users through continuous surveillance.
  • Facility Inspection & Maintenance:
    Inspect the facility, perform preventative maintenance and report any unsafe conditions or equipment failures.
  • Chemical Testing:
    Perform regular water chemistry tests and accurately log the readings to maintain water quality and compliance.
  • Event Operations:
    Assist with the setup and teardown of equipment for various aquatic programs, special events and open recreation activities.
  • Certification and Fitness:
    Maintain an up‑to‑date American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification and preserve the required fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance) necessary to effectively respond to all aquatic emergencies.
  • Cleanliness:
    Maintain a clean and inviting aquatic environment.

    Must possess and maintain a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
Working Conditions
  • Environment:
    Indoors in a non‑air‑conditioned space.
  • Physical:
    Frequent standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting weight up to 40 lbs regularly. During an emergency a lifeguard must possess the physical ability to perform immediate, strenuous and sustained effort for the rescue or extraction of a victim of unknown weight.
  • Sensory:
    Potentially loud and busy work environment that requires strong communication and observation skills.
  • Schedule:

    Flexibility in availability is needed to potentially work early mornings, late nights, weekends, and breaks.
  • Safety:
    Exposure to potential safety hazards and adherence to the emergency action plan to mitigate risk.
