Senior Archaeologist or Senior Architectural Historian

GEI has an outstanding senior‑level opportunity in California to support our growing cultural resources practice and other environmental services. The position is a full‑time, hybrid office role that can be based in Sacramento, Oakland, or Southern California. The role involves working closely with our team of archaeologists and architectural historians to pursue new project opportunities and successfully execute the work, serving as a key member of multidisciplinary teams that include scientists, engineers, planners, and project managers across the company.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Lead cultural staff in meeting the technical and financial aspects of projects, including development of field and office schedules and maintaining accountability for deadlines.
  • Assist with the administrative aspects of overseeing the cultural resources group, including supervision of staff.
  • Win, lead, plan, and manage contracts for cultural resources services on a variety of water resources, environmental resources, and energy projects throughout California and the U.S.
  • Serve as project manager and/or task leader, managing the technical, financial, and client‑relationship aspects of projects.
  • Oversee preparation of technical analyses and reports for Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, CEQA, NEPA, and other environmental documents to comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Identify, evaluate, and solve complex environmental and regulatory issues related to cultural resources management facing our clients.
  • Mentor junior and mid‑level cultural resources staff and work closely with other senior‑level archaeologists and architectural historians.
  • Collaborate with other project environmental specialists, engineers, planners, project managers, and project directors to execute projects.
  • Maintain high visibility in the marketplace through regular client contact, participation in professional organizations, and presentations at client and industry events.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Serve as a role model for leadership, company culture, and values.
Minimum Qualifications
  • MA, MS, or Ph.D. in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or Architectural History from an accredited college or university.
  • 10–15 years of relevant experience in cultural resources compliance with increasing responsibility for winning, managing, and executing cultural resources projects in California.
  • Strategic planning, leading, and managing of cultural resources projects, including preparation of cultural resources documents.
  • Expertise in identifying, evaluating, and solving cultural resources and regulatory issues related to water resources, environmental resources, and energy projects in California.
  • Strong reputation for high‑quality work products and regulatory problem solving within the industry.
  • Business‑development track record as a “seller‑doer.”
  • Experience preparing proposals, statements of qualifications, and other marketing materials to obtain new work.
  • Outstanding problem‑solving, organization, coordination, writing, people, and verbal communication skills; solid work ethic; ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams.
  • Approximately 75 % office/home‑office attendance and 25 % field/traveling; negotiable based on candidate preferences.
