The California Department of Technology (CDT) is seeking a skilled and analytical professional to join our Enterprise Product Support team as a System Administrator (Information Technology Specialist I).

This position provides technical and analytical support for enterprise software products and systems that support CDT operations and statewide customers.

About the Role

Under the direction of the Enterprise Product Support Information Technology Manager I (ITM I), the Information Technology Specialist I (IT Spec I) performs a variety of technical and analytical duties that require regular problem solving within broadly stated and non‑specific guidelines.

The scope of work includes supporting multiple program areas and performing planning, development, implementation, and maintenance activities for technological solutions essential to CDT’s mission. The IT Spec I functions in a specialized analytical capacity, taking technical accountability for assigned work and decisions. Work performed may affect other technical staff, technology projects, and services provided to customers.

  • Develop written procedures and documentation to support proper and timely system maintenance.
  • Perform system maintenance activities in accordance with the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
  • Create clear and detailed documentation for the use of complex proprietary and third‑party software products using tools appropriate for the intended audience.
  • Independently or as part of a team, analyze department‑wide technical issues and apply judgment and ingenuity when interpreting guidelines and developing solutions.
  • Monitor and tune proprietary and third‑party software products using operating system and vendor‑supplied tools to support system performance and availability.
  • Apply existing technologies to resolve critical system‑level problems and support customer business needs.
  • Install, maintain, and support department‑wide proprietary mainframe and client/server software products following vendor documentation, customer schedules, and organizational policies.
  • Identify and diagnose software malfunctions, including recovery or restoration of system software and data using diagnostic tools and vendor support when necessary.
  • Perform regular backups of critical systems and restore data or system software following outages or customer requests.
  • Review system software and hardware specifications to ensure customer environments can be supported by CDT.
  • Communicate regularly with internal and external customers to provide status updates, exchange information, and identify future tasks and service needs.
  • Attend team meetings and participate in team‑related activities.
  • Review supported software for resource optimization.
  • Develop automated processes to improve efficiency in monitoring and controlling production environments.
  • Perform change management activities related to software upgrades, modifications, and issue resolution.
  • Review data for obsolescence and support purging activities as appropriate.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of z/OS operating systems and related software and hardware.
  • Experience with zSystems components, workloads, and utilities (e.g., JES2/JES3, TSO, ISPF, JCL, CLISTs, REXX, SMF, RACF, SMP/E).
  • Understanding of zSystems workload types and workflows, including interactive and batch processing.
  • Software installation experience on the zSystems platform.
  • Experience using Session Manager, TSO, and Passport applications for mainframe access.
  • Knowledge of Linux on z and UNIX System Services (USS).
