Schedule:

40 hours per week

A vacancy exists in the Office of Budget and Finance, Vehicle Operations and Maintenance Division.

Under general supervision, performs a full range of skilled diagnostic, repair, and maintenance work on automobiles, light trucks, and related equipment.

  • Performs scheduled automotive preventive maintenance and service, such as engine oil and filter changes, chassis lubrications, engine tune-ups, and the replacement of tires, batteries, belts, hoses, and lights.
  • Diagnoses automotive malfunctions.
  • Inspects, adjusts, repairs, and replaces various automotive components and systems such as brakes, ignitions, exhaust systems, and suspensions.
  • Repairs and replaces starters, alternators, generators, and other electronic automotive components.
  • Repairs automotive air conditioning, heating, and cooling systems.
  • Performs front end alignments.
  • Prepares new vehicles for police service by installing specialized equipment such as cages, overhead lights, gun racks, and identification decals.
Examples of Other Duties
  • Operates equipment to tow disabled vehicles to the shop.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Three years' automotive repair and maintenance experience. (Related training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.)

Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial class C, Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment. Some positions may require possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class B Maryland driver's license and a current Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. (License may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.)

Proof of License(s), Certification(s) and Education
Applicants are required to submit proof of license(s), certification(s) and education beyond high school to meet the required and preferred qualifications of the position. Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant's major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions. Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.

Employees hired after July 1, 2022 are required to participate in the Baltimore County Employees' Retirement System, with very limited exceptions.

Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment.

Some employees in this classification may be required to work overtime with little or no advance notice. Some positions may be designated as Emergency/Essential.
