Overview

Cox Engineering is seeking a skilled and highly motivated BAS System Specialist, also referred to as a Construction Technician, reporting directly to the Field Operations Manager. This critical role is responsible for the physical installation, wiring, testing, and commissioning of Building Automation System (BAS) hardware on commercial construction projects. The System Specialist ensures the physical system meets design specifications, communicates reliably, and is ready for the Application Engineer to program and optimize.

This position requires hands‑on technical expertise and dedication to safety and quality in a construction environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • System Installation
  • Hardware Installation Review: review installation of all BAS control panels, controllers, sensors, actuators, valves, and field devices according to design specifications and submittal drawings.
  • Panel Assembly: assist with control panels in the shop, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Safety and Compliance: maintain a safe work environment at all times, strictly following company safety policies and all job‑site safety regulations.
  • Checkout and Pre‑Commissioning: conduct comprehensive point‑to‑point and system continuity checks to verify the integrity of all installed wiring and devices.
  • Power‑Up: safely power up control panels and perform initial controller addressing, network setup, and communication verification (e.g., BACnet, Modbus).
  • Calibration: perform initial calibration and functional testing of sensors, transducers, and actuators to ensure accuracy before final commissioning.
  • Project Team

    Collaboration:

coordinate daily work activities with the Project Manager, Field Operations Manager, and other trades to ensure seamless workflow and maintain the project schedule.
  • Troubleshooting: troubleshoot and resolve complex hardware, wiring, and communication issues encountered in the field.
  • Documentation: markup red‑line drawings and checklists to reflect accurate as‑built conditions and changes made during installation, ensuring clear documentation for the project team.
  • Functional Testing: support the project team during the commissioning phase by assisting with functional tests (e.g., VAV box checkout, AHU sequencing) to verify control sequences are operating correctly.
  • Punchlist Completion: expediently complete all assigned punchlist items and final adjustments needed for system acceptance.
Qualifications Required
  • 5+ years of hands‑on experience as a Technician in Building Automation Systems (BAS), HVAC controls, or a related low‑voltage industry.
  • Deep knowledge of control wiring, low‑voltage power distribution, and safe working practices on commercial construction sites.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret technical documents, including control drawings, wiring diagrams, and mechanical plans.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, electrical metering equipment (multimeters), and basic computer networking concepts for controls.
  • Strong commitment to quality workmanship, attention to detail, and a positive attitude in a demanding field environment.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to various job sites throughout the region.
Preferred
  • Technical school degree or vocational training in HVAC, Electrical, or Controls Technology.
  • Experience with Tridium Niagara or Delta Controls.
  • OSHA 10‑Hour or 30‑Hour Construction Safety Certification.
