Responsibilities
  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of SCA.
  • Assess patient preoperative and postoperative status at intervals according to facility policies, including cardiovascular, respiratory, airway management, neurological, hemodynamic, pain, comfort, and mental status.
  • Interpret information accurately from various monitors.
  • Describe pathophysiology and physiology associated with anesthesia techniques and surgical interventions.
  • Apply scoring systems (e.g., Aldrete Score, Modified Aldrete Score, PADSS) for patient transfer.
  • Develop and implement individualized perianesthesia care plans.
  • Perform interventions to maintain patient safety, including:
    • Managing recovery from anesthesia (general, monitored, regional, local).
    • Protecting patient from injury caused by positioning, thermal sources, and extraneous objects.
    • Communicating patient status throughout the continuum of care.
    • Providing acute pain and comfort management.
    • Administering medications safely using the eight rights of safe medication administration.
    • Maintaining wound integrity, tissue perfusion, and system baselines.
    • Managing fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances.
    • Maintaining normothermia after the postoperative period.
    • Preventing infection.
    • Managing comorbid conditions and fluid as prescribed.
    • Assessing patient knowledge and providing education on post-operative care.
    • Involving patient or support person in care decisions.
    • Protecting patient rights, dignity, and privacy.
    • Providing culturally competent care.
    • Delivering consistent care regardless of setting.
  • Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes.
  • Transfer care as needed and provide accurate hand-off reports.
  • Delegate tasks per state Nurse Practice Act and relevant regulations.
  • Document nursing care completely and accurately.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines.
  • Participate in quality review and performance improvement projects.
  • Engage in the performance appraisal process.
  • Use problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective teamwork.
  • Maintain required competencies and pursue professional growth.
  • Act as a patient advocate, maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
  • Comply with facility policies and actively participate in team meetings, trainings, and safety huddles.
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • One year of Pre‑operative or PACU nursing experience.
  • Medical/surgical nursing experience.
  • Current state licensure in good standing.
  • Completion of Basic Life Support (BLS) or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) within 90 days of employment (or documentation of current certification).
  • Completion of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) within 90 days of employment (or documentation of current certification).
  • Completion of Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 90 days of employment (or documentation if pediatric care is included).
