The Pediatric Critical Care Physician provides comprehensive medical care to critically ill infants, children, and adolescents in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). This role focuses on advanced life support, complex medical decision-making, and coordination of multidisciplinary care to optimize outcomes for high-acuity pediatric patients and their families.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesProvide direct clinical care to critically ill pediatric patients in the PICU
Perform comprehensive assessments, daily rounds, and ongoing management of complex medical conditions
Diagnose and manage acute and life-threatening illnesses including respiratory failure, sepsis, shock, neurologic emergencies, and multi-organ dysfunction
Manage advanced life support therapies including mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, and invasive monitoring
Perform procedures consistent with training and privileges, such as central line placement, arterial line placement, intubation, and bedside procedures
Interpret diagnostic studies including laboratory data, imaging, and hemodynamic monitoring
Collaborate with pediatric subspecialists, surgeons, anesthesiology, nursing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and other allied health professionals
Participate in family meetings, goals-of-care discussions, and shared decision-making
Supervise and educate residents, fellows, medical students, and advanced practice providers
Participate in rapid response teams and pediatric resuscitation efforts
Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and outcomes initiatives
Comply with all regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school
Completion of an accredited Pediatrics residency program
Completion of an accredited Pediatric Critical Care Medicine fellowship
Board-eligible or board-certified in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine
Ability to obtain and maintain unrestricted state medical licensure
DEA registration or eligibility
Expertise in pediatric critical care and advanced life support
Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills in high-acuity settings
Excellent communication skills with patients families and multidisciplinary teams
Ability to manage complex, critically ill pediatric patients
Commitment to evidence-based, compassionate, family-centered care
Pediatric intensive care units and hospital inpatient settings
Schedule includes day, night, weekend, and on-call coverage depending on program structure
Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout critical care environments
Manual dexterity for bedside procedures and emergency interventions
Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for patient monitoring and clinical assessment
