Epileptologist (MD/DO)
Position Summary
The Epileptologist provides specialized neurologic care focused on the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of epilepsy and seizure disorders. This role includes comprehensive outpatient and inpatient care, advanced diagnostic interpretation, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to deliver evidence-based, patient-centered epilepsy care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Evaluate and manage patients with epilepsy and seizure disorders, including medically refractory epilepsy
- Diagnose and differentiate seizure types and epilepsy syndromes
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, including anti-seizure medications and non-pharmacologic therapies
- Interpret and manage advanced diagnostic studies such as routine and continuous EEG, video EEG monitoring, and neuroimaging
- Provide inpatient neurology and epilepsy consultation services as needed
- Participate in epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) care and clinical oversight
- Collaborate with neurosurgery, neuropsychology, neuroradiology, psychiatry, and epilepsy care teams
- Participate in multidisciplinary epilepsy conferences and surgical case evaluations
- Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, safety considerations, and long-term management
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
- Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and outcomes initiatives
- Supervise and educate residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, or trainees as applicable
- Comply with all regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school
- Completion of an accredited Neurology residency program
- Completion of an accredited Epilepsy fellowship
- Board-eligible or board-certified in Neurology
- Board certification or eligibility in Epilepsy preferred
- Ability to obtain and maintain unrestricted state medical licensure
- DEA registration or eligibility
- Expertise in epilepsy and seizure disorder management
- Proficiency in EEG interpretation and epilepsy diagnostics
- Strong clinical judgment and diagnostic reasoning skills
- Excellent communication and patient counseling abilities
- Ability to manage complex and chronic neurologic conditions
- Commitment to evidence-based, patient-centered care
- Outpatient epilepsy clinics, epilepsy monitoring units, and inpatient hospital settings
- Call coverage as determined by practice or service needs
- Ability to sit, stand, and move throughout clinical environments
- Manual dexterity for neurologic examinations
- Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for EEG interpretation and patient assessment
