Mechanical Engineer II – Spaceflight Hardware / Bioinstrumentation / CAD / Microfluidics
We are currently partnered with an early-stage technology organisation developing spaceflight hardware for scientific research and manufacturing beyond Earth. They are looking to hire a Mechanical Engineer II to take hands-on ownership of mechanical hardware development, from early concepts through deployment.
The role focuses on spaceflight bioinstrumentation hardware, including electromechanical and microfluidic systems, with an emphasis on rapid prototyping, mechanical design, manufacturing, and system-level integration.
Key responsibilities
- Design and analyse mechanical hardware for spaceflight bioinstrumentation
- Develop electromechanical and microfluidic hardware systems
- Evaluate mechanical design trade-offs across weight, thermal implications, and cross-disciplinary integration constraints
- Apply rapid prototyping techniques to evaluate and refine mechanical designs
- Use FDM, SLA, laser cutting, and CNC machining for rapid prototyping
- Develop CAD models and engineering drawings to support fabrication and manufacturing
- Create and maintain technical documentation for mechanical hardware
- Partner with manufacturing teams to conduct Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews
- Support the transition of mechanical designs into production
- Contribute to Assembly, Integration, and Test (AIT) activities for complete flight systems
- Consider mechanical designs within the context of wider system-level requirements and constraints
Key requirements
- 4+ years of mechanical engineering experience with in-space hardware
- Experience designing and developing mechanical hardware
- Experience with mechanical design and analysis
- Experience developing CAD models and engineering drawings
- Experience with rapid prototyping techniques
- Experience with fabrication methods including FDM, SLA, laser cutting, or CNC machining
- Understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
- Experience supporting manufacturing and production transitions
- Experience contributing to Assembly, Integration, and Test (AIT) activities
- Systems-thinking approach to mechanical design and cross-disciplinary integration
- Ability to evaluate design trade-offs involving weight, thermal implications, and integration constraints
