American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring 1.5+ years of nursing experience with SD or compact RN license and ACLS/NIHSS certification.
Requirements
- Active SD or compact RN license required
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 1.5 years of general nursing experience with at least 1 year specific to PCU
- Completion of an approved nursing education program required
- Experience with cardiac procedural recovery (CABG/TAVR/post cardiac cath) required
- MI pharmacology knowledge and experience with titratable cardiac/vasoactive drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Levo, Dopamine) required
- Experience with Heparin drips and cardiac rhythm interpretation required
- Chest tube management experience required
- TNK administration experience preferred
- Epic EMR experience preferred
Responsibilities
- Mixed acuity 44-bed unit including Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and Med Surg patients
- Cares for direct admits, ED admits, and post cath lab patients
- Treats MI, NSTEMI, STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmia management, pacemaker malfunction, and epicardial pacers
- Serves as backup stroke unit and medical overflow
- Step-down level care for post cardiac/vascular, post-cardiac cath, post open heart surgery, post TAVR, post EP studies, and post pacemaker insertion patients
- RN to patient ratio typically 1:4, occasionally 1:3 depending on acuity
- Supported by CNAs (ratio 1:5-8), phlebotomy for peripheral draws, occasional resource nurse, tele tech for cardiac monitoring, and 24/7 RT coverage
- Uses Epic charting system, Alaris pumps, and Omnicell
- May float primarily to sister General PCU unit, or to MS/Tele or ICU as needed within scope of practice
- 12-hour variable shifts or ), may include both days and nights during contract
- Every other weekend rotation required
- Every other holiday coverage required
- No on-call requirements
- Confirm cardiac telemetry strips at 6am and 6pm as tele tech oversees monitoring
- May be expected to precept nursing students
- Orientation includes 2 partial days of education plus 3 12-hour shifts on the unit
- Navy blue scrub color required
- Free parking provided
- Time off approval up to 7 days, with extension required if taking a full week; no time off permitted during the first 3 weeks of August annually due to a local event
- Scheduling includes at least two days off after a night shift before being assigned a day shift
- First-time travelers considered only with 2+ years of experience
- Travelers must live 100 miles away from any facility within the health system, no local candidates accepted
- Permanent staff must wait one full year before returning as a traveler
