American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring a South Dakota or compact RN license and at least 1.5 years of nursing experience, including 1 year in PCU.
Details- Hospital-based 44-bed Progressive Care Unit (mixed acuity: Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and Med Surg)
- Patient population includes direct admits, ED admits, post Cath Lab, MI/NSTEMI/STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmia management, pacemaker malfunction, and epicardial pacers
- Serves as backup stroke unit and medical overflow
- Step-down level care for post cardiac/vascular, post-cardiac cath, post open heart surgery, post TAVR, post EP studies, and post pacemaker insertion patients
- RN to patient ratio typically 1:4, occasionally 1:3 depending on acuity
- Supported by CNAs (1:5-8 ratio), phlebotomy for peripheral blood draws, respiratory therapy 24/7, and occasional resource nurse support
- Tele tech oversees cardiac monitoring; RN confirms strips at 6am and 6pm
- Uses Epic EMR, Alaris pumps, and Omnicell
- 12-hour night shifts, 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation every other weekend
- No on-call requirements
- Floating primarily to sister General PCU unit, with potential floats to MS/Tele or ICU for PCU-level patients, or to units within scope of practice and below
- Active RN license (South Dakota or Compact) required
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum 1.5 years of general nursing experience, including 1 year specific to PCU
- Completion of an approved nursing education program
- Experience with cardiac procedural recovery (CABG/TAVR/post cardiac cath), MI pharmacology, titratable cardiac/vasoactive drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Levo, Dopamine), Heparin drips, cardiac rhythm interpretation, and chest tube management
- TNK administration experience preferred
- Epic EMR experience preferred
- Provide step-down level nursing care for cardiac and post-surgical patients in a mixed acuity unit
- Confirm cardiac monitoring strips twice daily alongside tele tech support
- Orientation includes 2 partial days of education and 3 twelve-hour shifts on the unit
- Holiday coverage required every other holiday
- Time off requests approved for up to 7 days, with full week requests requiring extension; no time off approved during the first 3 weeks of August annually due to the Sturgis Bike Rally
- Navy blue scrub color required
- Free parking provided
- Candidates must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility; no local travelers accepted
- First-time travelers considered only with 2+ years of experience
- Permanent staff must wait 1 full year before returning as a traveler
