American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring 1+ years of stepdown/intermediate care experience and a South Dakota or compact RN license.
Details- Mixed acuity Ortho Neuro Surgical (ONS) unit spanning 64 beds across 2 floors
- Patient population includes surgical (urology, general abdominal), ortho (total joints, trauma), neuro/spine (CVA/TIA, craniotomies, spinal surgeries), general medical, and telemetry-monitored patients
- RN to patient ratio of 1:4 (can be 3:1 depending on acuity), CNA ratio of 1:8
- Pod structure with 8 patients per pod, staffed with 2 RNs and 1 Nurse Aide
- 12-hour day shifts on a 6-week schedule
- Weekend rotation up to 4 out of 6 weekends, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
- No mandatory on-call requirements
- May float to any adult inpatient unit including Med Surg, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, and Observation
- Uses Epic EMR, Baxter IV pumps, and Omnicell medication dispensing
- Active RN license (South Dakota or Compact) required
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 1 year of intermediate/stepdown level nursing experience required
- Completion of an approved nursing education program required
- Epic EMR experience required, especially for first-time travelers
- Experience with cardiac strip interpretation, chest tubes, trach care, NGT tube management, JP drains, line management (PICC/Midline/CVL/PIV), wound vacs, and wound care
- Experience with drip titration of medications such as Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, and Amiodarone
- Comfortable accepting Med Surg assignments
- Preferred experience with post neuro-intervention patients, though unit provides education and resources for those without this experience
- Support staff includes dedicated charge nurses per floor, flex nurse (10a-10p), phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, resource nurse, 24/7 respiratory therapy, and 24/7 hospitalist coverage
- Orientation includes 2 days of unit/department orientation plus 2 shifts with a preceptor
- May be expected to precept nursing students
- Navy blue scrub color required

- Must maintain 90% compliance with monthly pre/post pain scoring audits
- Time off requests must be submitted prior to offer, with 1.5 weeks approvable (requiring contract extension to meet 13-week minimum)
- Blackout dates apply from August 1-18 due to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, with no time off approved during this period
- Holiday RTO is not currently being accepted
- First-time travelers welcome if they have more than 1 year of experience and Epic experience
- Candidates must live 100+ miles from the facility, as local candidates are not accepted
- Permanent staff must wait a full year before returning as a traveler
- Facility is known for being traveler-friendly with high renewal rates
