Hospital

• 353 Fairmont Blvd., Rapid City, SD
• 417 beds, teaching hospital, Magnet designated, Primary Stroke and Chest Pain Center
• Level II Trauma Center, Level II Pediatric Trauma, Level III NICU
• EMR: Epic (let the CRT know if the traveler has no Epic experience so they can ask for approval)

Unit Overview

• 28 beds, average census 13–16
• Ratios: 1:1 to 1:4
• Neonates of all gestational ages
• Diagnoses include low birth weight, high-frequency ventilation, nitric oxide, total body cooling, and feeders/growers
• No ECMO and no cardiac surgery at this time
• Surgical patients are transferred out, since there is no dedicated pediatric surgical team
• Support: CNA (1:10), charge nurse (1:25, attends deliveries), RN phlebotomy, RT, and lactation consultants
• Coverage: 3 neonatologists and 10 neonatal NPs with 24/7 coverage, plus a 24/7 transport team
• No IV/VAT team
• Equipment:
  Alaris pumps, Omnicell

Requirements

• Minimum 1.5 years of experience (system requirement)
• First-time travelers accepted only with 2+ years of experience
• RN license (South Dakota Board of Nursing)
• Certifications:
  
  BLS, NRP, and PALS (STABLE preferred)
• Skills:
  
  vent management, IV starts, chest tubes, IV medication titration; NRP experience preferred, since the charge nurse attends deliveries
• Travelers must live more than 100 miles from the facility
• Permanent staff must wait one full year to return as a traveler

Schedule & Policies

• Floating: PICU, pediatrics, postpartum, newborn nursery, and adult (constant observation only)
• No weekend rotation; the traveler may work mostly weekends
• Holidays: 2 of 4 major holidays
• On call only if placed on call for low census
• Time off: only if pre-approved by management
• Orientation: general traveler orientation, then 1 day and 1 night on the unit
