Description KLJ is seeking an Archaeological Field Technician to support cultural resource projects across various infrastructure, environmental, and construction efforts. This role involves fieldwork and documentation to help preserve archaeological and historical resources while ensuring compliance with preservation laws.What You’ll Do
- Assist in the collection, identification, and documentation of artifacts and spatial data
- Conduct field surveys, site recordation, monitoring, and excavation
- Support project compliance with historical and environmental regulations
- Prepare accurate reports and documentation using GIS and GPS tools
- Maintain field and lab equipment; follow safety and procedural guidelines
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and support permitting efforts
- Travel to project sites as needed
- Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Historic Preservation, or related field
- 1–3 years of archaeological fieldwork experience
- Familiarity with GIS software, Trimble GPS, Arc Collector, Survey

- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and on a team in dynamic environments
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel
- 40+ hours per week
- 80% field work / 20% office work
- Physically demanding role; ability to walk long distances on uneven terrain and lift up to 75 lbs
- $40.00/hr. based on experience. Provides technical assistance for the collection, identification, and compiling of artifacts, observational, and spatial data concerning a variety of archaeological and historical sciences. Provides cultural resources support to technical staff and project managers to ensure that construction or environmental permitting work done on or near archaeological sites complies with historical preservation laws. Tasks may include assisting with field investigations relating to construction, infrastructure, transmission, energy, pollution control, emergency response, and preserving the quality of the environment by identifying, controlling, and preventing disruption to resources of cultural and scientific significance.
Generates accurate and concise documentation assessing project areas, and applying and integrating archaeological science to solve environmental challenges. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards. Assist with collecting, identifying, and compiling artifacts, observational, spatial, and archaeological data from field sites for projects, investigations, and surveys. Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements and statistical analysis of archaeological data.
Perform basic professional archaeological work relating to cultural resources, verifying the characteristics of a site and providing technical assistance on various historical preservation and environmental issues. Contribute to the preparation of technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, field/work site notes, and software. Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, the maintenance of sample collection, laboratory documentation, written procedures, and logbooks.
Assist with maintaining and calibrating equipment and tools, troubleshooting or reporting on malfunctions, and performing inventory control activities. Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis with low-level threat mitigation activities, projects, and permitting activities to minimize or negate impacts to resources of cultural and scientific significance. Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
