Incumbent is responsible for taking verbatim records of the court proceedings and producing transcripts when necessary and acting as a personal secretary for the judges as determined by the rotating court reporter schedule.

- Friday 8:00am - 4:00pm
Classification: Unclassified / Non-Exempt
Salary: $30.00 - $33.00 per hour depending on experience
Pre-Employment Testing: Criminal background check;

- Take verbatim court proceedings at a rate of 225 words per minute.
- Prepare and file entries, correspondence, work‑related letters, and opinions as directed by the judge; file them in the appropriate departments.
- Transcribe, edit, proofread transcripts and file them with the Court of Appeals in a timely manner.
- Prepare media requests and orders during court proceedings.
- Prepare jury instructions and jury verdict forms.
- Mark all exhibits during court proceedings and maintain care and custody of the exhibits.
- File all stenograph notes and download any recorded court proceedings.
- Prepare temporary protection orders and personally serve them or fax them to the jail when necessary.
- Ensure all court proceedings are digitally recorded in the reporter's absence, downloading and storing all recordings.
- Answer phones, assist callers, take messages, and check voicemail.
- Perform general bookkeeping for the court reporter, including submitting transcript fee forms to the auditor when necessary.
- Notarize transcripts and related documents.
- Act as bailiff when required, swearing in witnesses and operating courtroom laptop and video arraignment equipment.
- Act as assignment commissioner / deputy bailiff when required.
Perform other related duties as needed.
EquipmentThe incumbent uses computer, printer, typewriter, copier, facsimile, courtroom recorder, video arraignment equipment, courtroom laptop, and a computerized stenograph machine. Incumbent must purchase a stenography machine and computer‑aided transcription software to qualify for duties.
Critical Skills / Expertise- Take verbatim court proceedings at 225 words per minute with 98% accuracy.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word and related software.
- Knowledge of stenograph theory and computer‑aided transcription software.
- Knowledge of RPR standards and procedures in typing transcripts.
- Knowledge and understanding of the judicial system.
- Excellent organization and preparation skills.
- Knowledge and experience in jury charges, literary, Q&A testimony, and four-voice testimony.
- Knowledge and experience in domestic relations court, municipal court, common pleas court depositions, city council meetings, jury trials, and arbitrations.
- Knowledge and experience in transcribing, editing, and proofreading transcripts.
Associate's degree in Applied Business and Court Conference Reporting required. Must possess a Notary Public license.
ResponsibilitiesThe supervisor provides general guidance allowing for planning of procedures and methods to attain objectives. The incumbent makes general decisions regarding work independently. Errors can lead to inaccurate or incomplete reports, transcripts, or technical data, potentially affecting case outcomes and resulting in termination.
Personal Work RelationshipsThe incumbent interacts with co‑workers, department employees, public and private sector employees, and the general public to accurately record court proceedings and to handle clerical duties.
Physical Effort & Work EnvironmentIncumbent performs sedentary work, may lift up to 15 pounds occasionally. Activities include fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Visibility tasks include close‑up seeing. Work is performed indoors with no adverse environmental exposure. Locations:
Portage County Municipal Court, 203 West Main Street, Ravenna, OH and 303 East Main Street, Kent, OH.
