Overview
TITLE: Juvenile Assistant Prosecutor
JOB OBJECTIVES: Incumbent is responsible for investigating, preparing and trying juvenile offenses, writing and arguing appeals.
Responsibilities- Preparing cases for trial by interviewing witnesses, performing legal research, and evaluating the strength of the case;
- Formulating sentence recommendations in serious cases involving felonies;
- Fielding calls from police officers requesting advice on charges;
- Attending trials, pretrial conferences;
- Communicating with victims regarding status of their case;
- Researching and writing legal pleadings, briefs, etc.
- Attending various seminars and public events;
- Preparing and presenting seminars for local law enforcement personnel.
II. DIFFICULTY OF WORK Performs related Essential and Non-Essential functions as needed.
EquipmentIncumbent operates a computer.
Critical Skills/Expertise- Comprehensive knowledge of the legal system;
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
- Knowledge of researching skills;
- Knowledge of the Rules of the Court, the Ohio Revised Code, Ohio Administrative Code, Civil Rules, etc.;
- Knowledge of grand jury and criminal proceedings.
Juris Doctor Degree is required. Incumbent must pass the bar exam and be licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio and in good standing with the Supreme Court of Ohio.
II. DIFFICULTY OF WORKWork consists of complex, varied, non-standardized tasks requiring the application of numerous laws, rules, regulations, and procedures.
III. RESPONSIBILITYIncumbent directs the work activities of investigators, paralegals, interns and clerks. Supervisor provides detailed and technical instructions when needed, and reviews work during case reviews. Incumbent makes most decisions regarding work independently. Errors in work could result in a guilty or delinquent person being incorrectly set free and unpunished.
IV. PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPSIncumbent has contact with co-workers, public and private sector employees, court personnel, institutional residents, and the general public. The purpose of these contacts is to prepare cases and obtain information about and prosecute juvenile offenders.
V. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT- Physical Requirements: Incumbent performs sedentary work which may require lifting up to fifteen (15) pounds occasionally.
- Physical Activity: Incumbent performs the following physical activities: standing, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking and hearing.
- Visual Activity: Incumbent performs work where the seeing job is close to the eyes.
- Job Location: Incumbent works inside with no exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
