Job DescriptionThe Water & Wastewater Plant Operator I is an "At‑Will" employee. Under the supervision of the Water & Wastewater Treatment Superintendent or chief operator, the incumbent performs entry‑level technical work in the operation, servicing and general maintenance of equipment in a water treatment plant, and assists in the backup operation of the wastewater treatment plant.
Essential Functions- Operate equipment in a water treatment plant including filters, pumps, valves, reservoirs, and related equipment.
- Control flow of water through the plant.
- Maintain reservoirs.
- Seasonally assist in establishing new springs as a water source by digging ditches, laying and maintaining lines.
- Monitor flow from springs and river sources.
- Operate pre‑treatment plant on a seasonal basis and adjust chemical feeds.
- Gather samples and run routine laboratory tests on water.
- Monitor a control board, read gauges and dials, and prepare daily reports.
- Maintain grounds around the plant, control weeds, and perform janitorial duties, including removing snow from walkways, picking up and hauling trash.
- Install and maintain cathodic protection on water lines.
- After exposure, fill in as operator of the wastewater treatment plant.
- Draw and haul grit.
- Monitor wastewater flowing into the plant, monitor a control panel and plant equipment, take samples, and perform routine tests on water in‑flow, in‑process, and effluent to determine level of treatment and treatment needs.
- Prepare and submit reports on a daily basis.
- Operate trucks and haul materials for other departments.
- Participate in ongoing training in treatment of water and wastewater.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent; some experience with mechanical equipment preferred.
- Ability to acquire Level I Certification in water treatment operation within one year, and Level I wastewater operator within two years.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Communication – Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
- Customer Service – Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, staff, and representatives of other agencies and the public in a courteous manner.
- Technical Understanding – Some knowledge of plant equipment, maintenance and related functions; working knowledge of chemistry, mathematics, and biology. Ability to learn water and wastewater characteristics, treatment plant principles, operations and equipment and to operate a computer.
The Water & Wastewater Plant Operator I works both inside water/wastewater facilities and outside environmental conditions. The essential functions require sustained periods of sitting and standing and the ability to carry and lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Adequate hand/eye/foot coordination, hearing and vision are required for operating light and medium equipment, tools and a vehicle, and for reading instructions and safety warnings.
