Overview
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is dedicated to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system across the state. We are seeking a motivated and skilled Engineer II to join our team in Rawlins, Wyoming.
This full-time position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to Wyoming’s transportation infrastructure, working on highway projects from initial design through final completion under the direction of the Resident Engineer. The Engineer II plays an important role in project planning, design, construction oversight, and contract management to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest safety and quality standards.
In this role, you will collaborate with the Resident Engineer and fellow team members to prepare and review project plans, specifications, and contracts while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Your efforts will directly support the development and maintenance of critical infrastructure that keeps Wyoming connected and safe.

- Issues, reviews, comments, and revises plan sets.
- Reviews and approves or rejects project submittals/permits.
- Reviews and updates forms and documentation procedures regarding construction activities and pay quantities.
- Inspects and assures projects/facilities are completed according to plans, specifications, design criteria, and budgetary constraints.
- Compiles and submits engineering recommendations and summaries for designing various projects/facilities with varying levels of complexity.
- Conducts extensive research on existing and evolving technologies.
- Provides technical guidance, advice, and oversight.
- Works in direct contact with contractors and subcontractors daily in the management of projects under construction.
- Deals with landowners, traveling public, local, county, state, and federal government entities in the same context.
- Performs field inspections, laboratory testing, materials analysis, and quality control.
- Develops engineering models, conducts studies, makes cost estimates, and submits reports, summaries, and other required documentation.
- Reviews and evaluates the work of assigned engineering technicians.
- Performs inspections and testing to ensure the contractor is constructing the project according to plans, specifications, etc.
- The contractor provides the necessary information to construct a project (showing a project and interpreting plans).
- Calculates and documents quantities for payment to the contractor.
- Examines and verifies numeric data and specifications on source documents by recalculating computations using geometry or trigonometry.
- Resolves geometric and trigonometric problems encountered during the process of making detailed engineering drawings.
- Review construction plans and verify that these are in accordance with designated specifications and other requirements.
- Conduct field engineering surveys, including operating a level, operating a total station, GPS, and make decisions to solve problems.
- Checks and verifies the accuracy of detailed project drawings and makes corrections in drawings if necessary.
- Design preliminary work, calculating land areas, earth forms, circular curves, material quantities, and other qualitative measurements using geometric and trigonometric computations.
