Job Title

Licensed Vocational Nurse I – Department of State Health Services, Region 11, Ray‑Mondeville, TX

Job Summary

Reporting to the Nurse Supervisor, the Licensed Vocational Nurse coordinates public health and surveillance duties. Responsibilities include performing moderate to complex nursing tasks, administering vaccines, maintaining vaccine inventory, collecting surveillance data, documenting care, conducting in‑service training, and operating state or personal vehicles for state business. The role may involve disaster response, continuity of operations, and travel up to 35 %.

Essential Job Functions
  • Client Services (40 %):
    Provide public health nursing services to clients with a range of simple to complex health needs; conduct and coordinate immunization clinics; administer vaccines; complete reports and documentation.
  • Consumer Information (15 %):
    Coordinate activities to inform, educate, and motivate the public in English and Spanish about immunization importance and safety; distribute patient information.
  • Vaccine Management (15 %):
    Comply with vaccine management guidelines; handle vaccines properly; maintain inventory and temperature logs; submit biological reports and documents to VAOS and CMIS.
  • Immunization Registry (10 %):
    Update data in the system to achieve at least 95 % registry coverage for children under 6; promote IMMTRAC2; reconcile reports.
  • Surveillance (10 %):
    Apply epidemiological methods to assess, prevent, and control disease; investigate vaccine‑preventable disease cases; follow up adverse events; assist with perinatal hepatitis B investigations.
  • Other Duties (10 %):
    Participate in disaster response or continuity of operations; may require alternate shift patterns or assignment changes.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Professional nursing theory and practice, including cultural and social factors.
  • Texas State Board of Nursing rules and regulations.
  • Public health principles, epidemiology, disease prevention, and health promotion.
  • Clinic/office operations and HIPAA confidentiality practices.
  • Vaccine administration, medication knowledge, and adverse reaction handling.
  • Basic computer data input, word processing, and internet use.
  • Basic nursing skills and independent judgment.
  • Effective communication, collaboration, leadership, confidentiality, and stress management.
  • Willingness to travel and operate state vehicles within Texas regulations.
  • Competency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word).
Registrations, Licensure, & Certifications
  • Licensed vocational nurse in Texas.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification.
  • Valid Texas Class C driver's license.
Initial Screening Criteria
  • Experience using Microsoft computer programs (Outlook, Excel, Word, Publisher, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to communicate in English and Spanish.
  • Experience administering injections.
