Job Overview
Fixed‑term 6‑12 month post for a Senior Shoulder Fellow at Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, situated in Reading, Berkshire (Craven Road, London Road). The role is part of the Trauma and Orthopaedics department, delivering high‑volume elective shoulder and elbow care, complex arthroscopic procedures and upper‑limb trauma services.
Key Details- Location:
Craven Road, London Road, Reading, RG1 5AN - Contract:
Fixed term, 6 months (extendable to 12 months on mutual agreement) - Working pattern:
Full‑time, 40 hours/week (50% reduced on‑call rota for Fellows) - Salary: £61,825 – £70,425 per annum (Band 1A – 50%)
- Grade:
Senior Clinical Fellow (NHS Medical & Dental) - Specialty:
Trauma and Orthopaedics – Shoulder Service
- Attend two outpatient shoulder clinics per week
- Conduct one formal ward round weekly
- Participate in three to four operating sessions weekly, including complex arthroscopic and revision arthroplasty procedures
- Attend a fracture clinic once a week (if required)
- Commit to a 24‑hour partial shift on‑call rota with other specialists
- Attend the daily trauma management meeting at 7:45 am
- Teach and mentor junior staff during clinical sessions
- Develop research projects (prospective or retrospective) and disseminate findings via presentations and publications
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of clinical practice and technology in shoulder and upper‑limb surgery
- Support the wider Trauma and Orthopaedics department in achieving its strategic goals
- Full registration with the General Medical Council
- Post‑FRCS (Orthopaedics) or equivalent
- Completion or nearing completion of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Orthopaedics
- Computer literacy (basic clinical software)
- Senior SpR level surgical experience, particularly in shoulder and upper‑limb conditions
- Capacity to provide a clinical opinion on a range of upper‑limb problems
- Ability to take responsibility for the clinical care of upper‑limb patients
- Research experience, preferably a higher degree in Orthopaedics (desirable)
- Experience of teaching and mentoring junior medical staff (desirable)
- Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency suitable for patient care and interviews.
- Telephone interviews are not conducted; applicants must be prepared for an in‑person interview.
- All new appointments are subject to a probationary period.
