Minimally Invasive Colorectal Surgery Fellow - General Surgery

This post is for a Minimally Invasive Colorectal Surgery Fellow to work within the Colorectal and General Surgery Unit at the Royal Berkshire Hospital alongside, and under supervision of, the colorectal consultants. The Fellow will gain extensive experience in robotic and laparoscopic colorectal surgery and TAMIS procedures for early rectal cancer and complex polyps. In addition, the Fellow will be involved in all aspects of this service including cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and pelvic floor surgery.

The department also undertakes a wide range of coloproctology procedures and runs courses in the modern management of haemorrhoids such as HALO Trilogy.

Main duties of the job

The fellow will be expected to participate in all aspects of the Trust's clinical and academic activities. These include: operative and ward-based teaching of juniors, including Core Surgical (CT) and Medical Specialty Registrars (SpR); participation in the weekly colorectal cancer MDT meetings, monthly departmental clinical governance meetings, bi‑monthly IBD MDT meetings, and monthly abdominal wall reconstruction MDT meetings; and involvement in all Trust clinical and academic activities.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full registration with the GMC/eligible for registration within 6 months of CCST in (Speciality) at interview date.
  • FRCS or equivalent.
  • Within 6 months of CCT date.
  • Demonstration of specialist training in Colorectal Surgery.
  • JAG accreditation for Colonoscopy.
Experience
  • Experience in surgery at senior SpR level.
  • Ability to offer clinical opinion on a range of problems in colorectal disease.
  • Ability to take responsibility for clinical care of patients with colorectal conditions.
  • Research with higher degree ideally in the field of colorectal surgery.
  • Experience of MDT working.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Evidence of good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Teaching training.
  • Ability and enthusiasm to teach medical undergraduates and Allied Health Professionals.
  • Personal participation in audit.
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
Disposition
  • Clarity of career aims, in particular reasons for choosing fellowship post in colorectal surgery.
  • Evidence of being a good team member.
