Position: Summer Challenge Volunteer

About the role

Our Summer Reading Challenge is back, and we need volunteers to help deliver our summer programme and support activities. Children are challenged to read a minimum of 6 books over the holidays, with stickers awarded along the way. Rewards include a medal ceremony and certificates for completion.

Volunteers will work at Nottingham City libraries throughout August, assisting with general craft activities, events, and general library support.

What you will be doing
  • Assisting children with fun art & craft activities
  • Talking with children about books and reading during activities
  • Helping staff to set up the library beforehand and/or clear away afterwards
  • Assisting at the end of the Challenge ceremony – organising certificates/medals, refreshments, etc.
The skills you need
  • Enjoy working with and able to relate to children and young people
  • Enthusiastic, patient, and willing to work with children of all backgrounds
  • Friendly and reliable
  • Able to commit to a minimum of 2 sessions in August
  • Positive attitude to libraries and able to promote the importance of reading
  • Good communication skills
  • Minimum age of 16+

Application process

All new applicants will need to attend a volunteer drop‑in session at Central Library to learn more about the role. Dates for the drop‑in sessions are below and will also be sent when we reply to your application.

  • Wednesday, 3 June, from 4‑5:45 pm
  • Thursday, 4 June, from 10 am‑12 pm
  • Friday, 5 June, from 12:30‑2:30 pm

1 June to 1 July:
All applications will be processed.

13 July:
Activity schedule set for volunteers for commitment and sign‑up.

13‑20 July:
Volunteers allocated to activities and confirmations sent out.

27 July – 28 August:
Summer Reading Challenge activities in all libraries.

Applications will be processed after we meet you at one of the drop‑in sessions or an online meeting. One character reference is required. Referees must have known you for more than 6 months and not be related to you.
