Position Goal

The Family and Community Engagement Specialist for Special Education educates parents about the systems within the school district that are available to support their children. Utilizing expertise across elementary, middle, high school, and post‑secondary pathways, the specialist guides, informs, and supports parents, ensuring they understand their role at each educational level and fostering unity between families and schools.

Essential Functions
  • Create a welcoming and culturally responsive atmosphere for parents and families district‑wide and within the Special Education Department.
  • Collaborate with district staff and families to develop a vision and plan for the family engagement program and implement steps for a robust support system.
  • Facilitate year‑round family and community engagement activities, including needs assessments, workshops, community events, parent orientations, and recruitment of parents for district activities.
  • Assist new families in transitioning smoothly into the district and local community.
  • Provide guidance on evaluation, IEP, and instructional services for the Special Education Program.
  • Host day, evening, and occasional weekend family events.
  • Stay current with elementary, middle, and high school programs to share expertise with families.
  • Inform parents of their rights and responsibilities and the multiple ways they can be involved in all school programs.
  • Seek community input on improvements to Special Education and other school programs.
  • Maintain and update files for federal reporting.
  • Collaborate with the Family Engagement Department on district‑wide activities.
  • Provide professional development for school personnel on strategies for supporting families of students with disabilities.
  • Participate in professional development sessions as appropriate.
  • Build strong relationships with parents and the community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
Supervisory Responsibilities

None

Qualifications / Requirements
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in education, social work, or a related human services field.
  • Two or more years of experience in parent, family, and community engagement activities and working with children and parents in home or school settings.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to establish working relationships with parents, families, and community members with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated interest in assisting parents and willingness to take initiative to organize workshops and classes.
  • Experience representing the district in conjunction with non‑school agencies or organizations.
  • Native‑like proficiency in both oral and written English and Spanish; bicultural background preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications.
Physical Demands

The role requires continuous sitting and communication, occasional repetitive hand motions, and frequent interaction with parents, the public, and staff. Vision requirements include close‑up reading and adjustment of focus. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for disability.

Work Environment

The environment is typically quiet, requiring interaction with parents, the public, and staff. The candidate must manage multiple demands and maintain professional interpersonal skills.

Evaluation

Formal annual evaluation by the Director of Special Education in accordance with RSSSA agreement and Board policy.
