Job OverviewThe Deputy Director of Finance – Financial Performance is a pivotal, very senior member of the Chief Finance Officer’s leadership team. The role supports the delivery of the Trust’s aims and improvements in quality, efficiency and effectiveness, deputising for the Director of Finance as required.
DetailedJob Description and Main Responsibilities
- Strategy – Be a role model for the Finance Matters strategy, provide strategic and operational leadership for finance, ensure financial objectives are clear and compliant with NHS England requirements, lead the financial management of the Trust, oversee financial risk and savings programmes.
- Financial Reporting and Budgetary Control – Provide regular reports to the Board, manage BOB ICS funding negotiations, produce accurate financial forecasts and manage risks, support Care Group Directors of Finance.
- Financial Control and Systems – Deliver budget proposals, develop control systems, compile monthly management returns, ensure alignment with national finance policies, oversee financial systems and account modifications.
- Statutory Accounts and Returns – Lead assurance that all Trust financial planning and forecasting aligns with expectations and regulations.
- Finance Directorate Leadership and Management – Provide leadership to the Finance team, support Care Group Finance teams, manage Personal Development Plans, promote a high‑performance culture.
- Corporate and Communications – Attend Board sub‑committees, represent the Director of Finance, develop partnerships, communicate with stakeholders, promote the Trust’s CARE values.
- Staff Management and Development – Manage finance teams, motivate and develop staff, foster diversity, provide training and recruitment support.
- Further responsibilities include strategic partnership with BOB ICS, financial planning returns, system‑wide digital strategy, and interim support for the Director of Finance.

- Education, Qualifications & Training: Professionally qualified accountant (e.g. CCAB, ACCA, CIPFA, CIMA)
- Experience: Significant post‑qualification experience at a senior level in a complex organisation; proven leadership; expert knowledge of NHS finance and accounting; track record in productivity programmes and change management; ability to develop partnership relationships.
- Skills, knowledge and attributes: Strong understanding of the healthcare sector; ability to contribute to long‑term strategy; interpret complex information and make resource decisions; commercial and business acumen; leadership and mentoring skills.
