Job Title

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT FACILITIES ASSISTANT – BAND 2

Job Summary

Participates in cleaning, stocking up and other non-clinical duties as required to ensure the smooth running of the department. Cleaning of equipment as per Infection Control Guidelines. Maintaining stock areas, making sure stores areas are clean, tidy and fully stocked at all times. The post holder is expected to be flexible, multi‑task and have the ability to work within a team and independently without direct supervision.

Provides a vital supporting role to the Emergency Department carrying out tasks such as patient and non‑patient portering, general maintenance, organisation of stores and making hot drinks for patients post‑procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Cleaning of equipment and patient areas in accordance with Infection Control Guidelines.
  • Maintaining the cleanliness and tidiness of stock areas and ensuring adequate and appropriate stock supplies.
  • Transfer of patients within the unit and to other areas of the hospital, escorting patients to other departments.
  • Providing patient and non‑patient portering, general housekeeping duties and supporting the Emergency Department.
  • Communicating effectively and respectfully with patients, relatives, visitors, ward leaders and the multi‑professional team using verbal and non‑verbal methods.
  • Answering telephone enquiries in a polite and professional manner, presenting a positive impression of the department.
  • Maintaining standards of infection prevention and control, ensuring equipment is clean and available for use.
  • Participating in moving and handling patients safely in accordance with the Trust Manual Handling Policy.
  • Participating in audits of stock, ensuring adequate supplies are maintained without excess.
  • Ensuring equipment such as wheelchairs and trolleys are sited and maintained in designated areas.
  • Ensuring department corridors, unit entrances and exits are clean, clear of obstacles and rubbish.
  • Contributing to the establishment and development of a quality service and performing any other duties delegated by the Nurse in Charge.
  • Planning, prioritising workload and managing time effectively; demonstrating a positive attitude.
Person Specification

Essential

  • No formal academic qualifications required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English using both verbal and written means.
  • Good literacy and numeracy, accurate and precise attention to detail.
  • Experience of cleaning and working within a team.
  • Demonstrate initiative and self‑motivation.
  • Well presented; good attendance record.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including moving and handling patients and assembling, operating and maintaining clinical equipment.
  • Occupational Health clearance required.

Desirable

  • Previous experience of working in a hospital setting.
  • Information technology literacy.
