Role Type: Part‑time / Contract (matchday + weekly delivery)
Reports to: Director of Rugby
Rams Rugby is seeking an experienced and proactive Head of Medical to lead and coordinate all medical provision across our senior performance programme.
This is a key leadership role within the rugby department, responsible for ensuring player welfare, injury management, medical governance, and alignment with performance staff in a competitive semi‑professional environment.
The successful candidate will play a central role in creating a robust, professional, and athlete‑centred medical programme that supports availability, performance, and long‑term development.
Key Responsibilities- Lead all medical provision for the senior performance programme (training and matchday), including First Team and Development Team
- Oversee injury assessment, diagnosis, rehabilitation, and return‑to‑play processes
- Coordinate and manage medical practitioners, including staffing and rotas for training and home and away fixtures
- Act as the primary medical liaison with Director of Rugby and coaching staff, Strength & Conditioning department, and external consultants and specialists
- Maintain clear medical governance, documentation, and reporting standards
- Provide regular injury and availability updates, including formal reporting to senior leadership / Board as required
- Advise on player load, availability, and risk management
- Ensure compliance with RFU medical standards along with safeguarding and duty‑of‑care requirements
- Maintain the medical environment and processes to a professional standard
- Support and encourage ongoing CPD within the medical team
- Current registration with the appropriate professional body relevant to the applicant’s qualification
- Proven experience working in rugby union or high‑performance sport
- Strong understanding of injury management and return‑to‑play frameworks, matchday medical requirements and interdisciplinary working within performance teams
- Excellent communication, organisation, and leadership skills
- Experience in semi‑professional or professional rugby
- Pitch‑side trauma qualification
- Experience leading or coordinating a medical team
