Overview

Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Clinical Site Manager (Bed Manager) for Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading. This permanent, full-time role (37.5 hours per week; unsocial hours including weekends and night duty) is with NHS AfC Band 7.

Key responsibilities
  • Act as management representative for all staff out of hours; coordinate site management and ensure appropriate action on complaints, accidents and incidents.
  • Ensure hospital is adequately resourced with nursing staff out of hours by redeploying staff and minimising reliance on NHSP/Agency staff.
  • Coordinate bed management to maximise efficient utilisation of beds; work with Lead Clinical Site Manager, ED and wards to meet access targets for ED and waiting lists.
  • Provide an out-of-hours site management service including operational management and clinical leadership for the hospital at night.
  • Establish working relationships with ward nursing staff to ensure accurate bed information and facilitate bed availability and allocations in collaboration with ED and ICU where appropriate.
  • Manage major incidents by instigating the incident room and implementing escalation policies as required.
  • Direct contact for on-call managers; act as a liaison with outside agencies where necessary.
  • Promote safety, compliance with Trust policies, and safeguarding of the Trust’s interests.
Site management and clinical practice
  • Lead and coordinate clinical practice for the Hospital at Night team; delegate workload and respond to emergencies (clinical and non-clinical) out of hours.
  • Act as Fire Officer out of hours where required; respond to cardiac arrests out of hours and provide necessary clinical actions.
  • Provide leadership and role modeling for professional practice and clinical leadership.
Education, training and development
  • Allocate work, assess performance, and ensure staff have Performance Reviews and Personal Development Plans; collaborate with HR as appropriate.
  • Promote effective communication, assertiveness, and safeguarding of patient rights; maintain data protection and confidentiality.
  • Support diversity and inclusive practice; promote interdisciplinary teamwork and development of staff.
Role responsibilities and safety
  • Monitor health, safety and security; assess risks and ensure compliance with risk management and occupational health requirements.
  • Develop personal and professional development plans and maintain a portfolio; pursue target-driven quality and risk management.
  • Act up for Lead Clinical Site Manager as required.
Person specification
  • Experience – Essential:
    At least 2 years as band 6 bed manager or 2 years at band 7 or above.
  • Desirable – Mentoring/leadership experience; evidence of change management within leadership.
