Overview

We are looking to recruit a full-time Consultant in Infection (Consultant with Specialist Training in Microbiology and CCT in Microbiology or Combined Infection Training or joint CCT in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology or equivalent) to work within an evolving Infection Service based at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LTHTR).

The post will be from February 2027, we will be looking at interviewing towards the end of October 2026.

Do you have what we are looking for to join the Team?

The Consultants offer a 24‑hour advisory service to clinicians and other clients of the service. The size and nature of the Trust inevitably means that this is a busy and demanding role, involving response to numerous telephone requests for advice, ward rounds, multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings and clinical liaison, both ward‑and telephone‑based.

Participation in the joint ward round with the Antimicrobial Pharmacist and rounds on other specialist units (e.g. critical care, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Surgery, Nephrology) will be agreed among the consultants according to personal interest and may rotate between the consultants with mutual agreement. Currently some of the ward rounds and MDTs are taking place through Microsoft Teams.

Post Holder Will
  • Provide input where required to infection management of patients and contribute to Microbiology Multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Be involved in the management of patients on the OPAT service.
  • Be involved in the Undergraduate Teaching of medical students.
  • Be involved in the clinical supervision of Higher Specialist Scientific Training.
  • Participate in the Infection Service Consultant on‑call rota (one in
    6) for Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Assume a continuous commitment for care of patients, even if employed less than full‑time and ensure that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
  • Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
  • Develop links with General Practitioners operating in the area.
Microbiology Laboratory

The Microbiology Laboratory at Royal Preston Hospital was built in 1989 and is situated in the Department of Pathology at Royal Preston Hospital. It is accredited for its clinical work by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (excluding Andrology).

Equipment includes Bact Alert Blood Culture System, Vitek 2 organism identification and antibiotic sensitivity testing system, Maldi-Tof mass spectrometer for organism identification and UF5000i urine analysers in bacteriology. In virology, a range of molecular testing is undertaken using three Roche cobas 4800 automated extraction platforms, the Hologic Panther and Cepheid Gene Xpert. Automated serological analysis is performed with the Roche Cobas e601 analyser for high volume screening supported by Diasorin Liaison XL for other investigations.

The Department is accredited for the training of BMS staff and is approved for the training of medically qualified Microbiologists.

Specialist Trainees of appropriate experience participate in the rota at a level compliant with European Working Time Directive and are always supervised by a named consultant. Currently this means that on occasions, the consultant will be second on‑call, supporting the Specialist Trainee who is first on‑call.
